Brady
Mallalieu Architects have recently completed the remodeling
and extension of a private house in Co. Dublin to convert
a standard inward looking dated suburban house into a contemporary
light and spacious bespoke house.
All
that remained of the original 1960's detached house were two
ground floor and two first floor rooms. Most was demolished
to make way for the new.
The
5 bedroom house now has a three storey high open living space
in which the first floor master bedroom cube protrudes on
stilts, clad in American white oak. Below it on the ground
floor there is a raised dining platform overlooking the main
living room and adjacent kitchen.
This
family space connects to the rest of the house via glass balustraded
cantilevered balconies overlooking the garden of mature trees.
The
new contemporary extension has a three storey semicircular
space clad in external insulated render with a copper detailed
trim. The Iroko timber panels and columns form part of the
material makeup on the exterior and the interior has American
white oak with rendered white walls. The split level living
room has a large open fireplace as its focal point and the
copper flu adds interest to the outside view.
The
extra second floor now gives panoramic views of Dublin Bay
through a fan of roof light windows in the semi circular lead
roof.
The
house is full of light and space yet has
privacy at the same time.
