This
new build housing project for Community Housing Group in Stoke
Newington in Hackney comes in two parts:-
A four storey single ‘Infill’ house has been designed
to fit within the existing terrace gap on Allen Rd. The main
housing project consists of seven ‘mews’ style
terrace of L-shaped designed houses and flats on the disused
Brownfield site to the rear between two existing Victorian
terraces.
Great care has been taken to avoid overlooking - each house
has its main rooms oriented towards the afternoon sun and
away from the windows in properties surrounding the site.
The new houses are constructed to be as low as possible, particularly
along the northern edge at the rear of the gardens to Clonbrock
Road.
The roofs of the development are predominantly flat whilst
each house has an individual zinc-covered pitched roof over
its first floor living room, which rises to catch the afternoon
sun. The scheme is designed to be attractive when viewed from
above by the surrounding buildings and to resemble garden
walls when viewed from the houses in Clonbrock Road.
Externally the houses have a windowless rear elevation of
brick to the neighbouring gardens to the north a self-coloured
render backing on to the next unit in the terrace. This gives
a hard protective shell to the rear of the unit and also reflects
daylight into the garden area of the unit behind. In contrast
the timber framed, cedar shingle clad courtyard elevations
gives a much softer, warmer feel to the garden side.
