This was my manifesto in June 2010 prior to being elected the next President of RIBA. It is all still relevant;
I will be the champion of all RIBA members. I will not be out ‘cutting ribbons of new supermarkets’ but out fighting our corner
I will try to make the RIBA of value to our members. The 'low fees' or 'no fees' issues are of the utmost importance and needs research and debate
During the 'BD on line' debate during the election this was discussed as well as at most of the hustings so is a big issue for members. I am totally against firms who do not pay their staff a proper wage. Students and young architects must be valued and exploitation must stop
We have got to value ourselves and the skills we bring to our projects and to society - if we don't value them no one else will
I have campaigned all of my professional life;- on environment issues, saving loved buildings, increasing women and diversity in our profession, standing up for better design locally and nationally, and promoting sustainability to the public. I have set up international networks and organized exhibitions worldwide to promote our architects and our profession
In the past 20 years I have been involved in some of the best professional advisory panels in the UK which are architectural, political, educational and in design review
I am a director of a well known private practice Brady Mallalieu who understands our professional needs and is willing to give up most of my time in the next 4 years for the cause of architects and architecture at a key time in our lives – this is not something chosen lightly or without much thought and sacrifice
I have been an ambassador for architects and architecture for many years aleady spending 2 days a week on issues facing our profession and initiatives to celebrate it too. I have the TV experience and the media skills necessary for the RIBA Presidency, to cover many events including the 2012 Olympics promoting the best of UK architecture to a global audience I will do it with enthusiasm, energy and panache. I have the passion and drive to be heard by a wide audience
I have some of the best backers in our profession. Read their testimonials on my website;- Sir Terry Farrell, Lord Rogers, Piers Gough, Nicole Crockett, Kim Wilkie, Geoffrey Wilson, and twenty more
Other supporters include; Sunand Prasad, Jack Pringle, Chris Wilkinson, Julia Barfield, Dickon Robinson, Clare Devine, Jeremy Till, Jane Duncan, John Leatherland, David Porter, Paul Keogh PRIAI and over 170 more RIBA members
I am the right person now to be the next President of RIBA
My Manifesto points issued with the voting papers June 2010;-
I believe in effective campaigning to promote the value architects and quality architecture should have in our society
Our design abilities as architects are unique and are the core skills we have to offer - you cannot deliver architecture without architects. A society and industry that values design will value architects. We must be forceful and unstinting in spreading the message of the value of architecture to solve our pressing problems. We need to inspire our students, support our practitioners and market our skills through debate, the media and political engagement. The position of architects in the construction industry will come under increasing pressure over the next 5 years and we must demonstrate that we as architects are fundamental to making social, economic and financial change in our society. Utmost in my mind is the plight of architects in a recession. More than ever we must defend our beliefs and fight our corner
Championing all architects and the smaller practice to increase work opportunities and simplify procurement frameworks
The RIBA needs to champion all architects and both large and small practices. My partner, Robin Mallalieu and I set up our private practice 23 years ago in London and as a small practitioner I know the challenges we face and have the experience to handle complex situations with confidence. We need to tackle framework agreements and OJEU’s so that they are fairer and more inclusive and put design higher up the list
Increasing national and global networks between all professions in the construction industry
We all need to network across the construction industry professions and with the CIC for better, clearer working practices. We must look beyond just talking to ourselves so that we can influence others. We need to inspire others in business, politics and the wider public to value our ethos and to engage with us to improve our service delivery. We need to be on those deciding committees so we are not excluded
Tackling climate change locally and nationally and promoting sustainability in schools and to the public
Climate change is the biggest challenge we face. As architects we are ideally placed to contribute. We need to support and deliver the much needed repair, restoration and recovery of our environment. We need to bring back a sense of individuality and regionalism in the face of the globalisation of our world. For 16 years I have been running sustainable design workshops in schools and with the RIBA and CABE. People want to understand our built environment and we can assist them, not least by valuing our 29 fantastic Architecture Centres and bringing the public on board from a grass roots level is vital
Valuing Architectural Education
Architectural education is very important to me. I am currently an external examiner at the Mackintosh and a visiting critic at London Met. and Cardiff. I believe in students abilities but they need to learn the practical tools of their trade and they need more mentoring and support from practice. I think the "fund banding" that architecture is positioned in needs to be upgraded from "Arts" to the same as engineering to attract the right funds to gear up for sustainable design as a science. Tough times lie ahead for them
A younger and more diverse RIBA which reflects this era and the majority of its members
We need to rediscover the good things at the RIBA. The RIBA is a membership organisation and you the members are my most important concern, especially in these tough time when we all have to get together and fight for our values and the value we can give society. I have campaigned for much loved buildings, for more women into architecture and for a more diverse profession, nationally and globally through the Architects for Change campaign and the DiverseCity exhibition. I have networked with hundreds of architects around the world
The RIBA needs to be the face of all members and to be of value to all architects. It also needs to reach out to those disenchanted architects and start to create a RIBA of value to them
With my media skills and personal energy I will be a vibrant figurehead to showcase UK architecture for the 2012 Olympics and carry this role with professionalism and panache
I will be a passionate campaigner for RIBA members in business, politics and public life, nationally and internationally and will work to extend the RIBA’s kudos, recognition and influence in the market place in the UK and worldwide.
Since this manifesto was issued in June 2010 these points have been reinforced.
Angela Brady April 2011

Election testimonials:
Below are a selection of testimonials I have received from people I have worked with on boards, panels, in education and on campaigns over the years and people who know my form;-
I believe that as President, Angela will be a revelation: Purposeful, energetic, communicative and happy and comfortable on a "big stage", she champions small (but good) practices and has good experience in public affairs - in short, she is a natural for the job. She could well turn out to be one of the best presidents of our time
Sir Terry Farrell
I had the pleasure of working with Angela when I was at the GLA and I believe that she has the skills to make an excellent President
Lord Richard Rogers, Chairman rsh-p
I don't know another architect with such unabashed enthusiasm for our profession and its capabilities. She has that elusive quality of presence and confidence in public and one to one. And boy does she know how to party! Angela would be a terrific President
Piers Gough CZWG
From its inception in 2000, Angela was a dynamic member of the English Heritage / CABE Urban Panel which I then chaired. Formed to take an innovatory approach to large historic city centre regeneration schemes and committed to progressing the resolution of complex and sensitive issues in forum with inevitably differently concerned and motivated parties, Angela unfailingly deployed her personal skills set and professionalism to great effect. In a way a microcosm of across the board involvement, she amply demonstrated her objectivity, natural diplomacy and her facility for bridge building. Never departing from her professional integrity, her approach was always open minded yet positive in direction, working in concert with colleagues in the profession as well as other disciplines.
A lifetime’s close working engagement with the profession principally through commercial development, but with parallel voluntary roles in the social housing, education and museum worlds, let me say with confidence that Angela Brady, professional, energetic, organised and aspirational would be a vigourous and achieving President admirably suited to our times
Geoffrey Wilson OBE HonFRIBA FRICS
Angela is an outstanding communicator and a passionate educator. As a trustee of the Building Exploratory she showed unrivalled commitment to the organisation and has been an ongoing advocate for our work. In the classroom I have seen Angela engage some of the most excluded young people, drawing out ideas and creativity that their teachers had not previously seen. Professionally, she has an innate ability to bring people together, her enthusiasm and energy helping to create communities with a positive sense of purpose. Angela's focus on diversity and equality within the world of architecture give her claim to the presidency a particular relevance
Dr Nicole Crockett, Chief Executive, The Building Exploratory, London
Angela Brady has my full support to become President of RIBA. If elected, I predict she will be an outstanding ambassador for the architecture profession: an energetic leader; a brilliant communicator; a principled and committed President who will promote inclusivity and diversity, good design, high standards of practice, and strong links with all other construction professionals. I regard Angela as one of the rare people who sees service as an end in itself, and is prepared to expend vast energy on behalf of others for the sake of her belief in the profession of architecture. I have been impressed by Angela’s work over many years in the field of diversity, where she has stood out for her ability to organise and achieve action, to energise and inspire groups of professionals internationally, whilst promoting the architecture profession itself
Helen Stone OBE Civil FREng BSc CEng FICE (retired)
Former director of Atkins, Chairman of the CIC Diversity Panel
I first met Angela on the English Heritage/CABE Urban Design Panel. Her energy, wit and perspicacity transformed our visits and discussions. Not only was she frank and fearless in her judgements, but she also managed really to listen to local residents, politicians and planners. One of the joys of the panel was the interaction between design professions and Angela was always open to the ideas and suggestions of other panel members. These qualities strike me as perfect for an RIBA president: someone who will really listen, bring together all the design professions and then pursue ideas with enormous energy, humour, charm and determination
Kim Wilkie Hon RIBA London
Angela Brady is a fighter, a doer and a motivator, with the capacity to inspire all who meet her. She is a fine architect, committed, in particular, to improving the lot of society's least advantaged. I have also witnessed, close up, her outstanding communication skills, both in person and as a broadcaster, who can connect with the man and woman in the street. Isn't that what the RIBA needs now in its President?
Shane O Toole RIBA RIAI
I have known Angela Brady for several years and have always been tremendously impressed by her knowledge, energy, commitment and drive to get things done in a very professional manner. I was absolutely delighted when Angela joined the board of the LDA which I chaired. Whilst Angela’s remit was as the Design Champion on the Board she was also involved with the multitude of issues that we faced. She was an exemplary Design Champion and fearless in her resolve to ensure that good design was at that forefront in the many construction decisions with which we were involved.
Angela is articulate and was well able to make her case in a persuasive and coherent way. She was a terrific Board member, very conscientious in her attendance, not only at Board meetings but at other LDA events including staff functions. Angela was highly regarded by all at the LDA, as well as by many of our major stakeholders, where she had a deep impact on pushing good design and sustainability and making people aware of architectural and environmental issues. Angela will be a splendid President of RIBA

Angela, I consider it an inspired thought on someone's part that you should be put forward for nomination as RIBA president and I would like to offer my complete support. From my time as RTPI President in the early 90’s, I know that you have to have tremendous commitment, great energy and be highly communicative. These are qualities that I have seen from my association with you, particularly as part of the Civic Trust Awards National Panel, you display in abundance. Above all however, any Institution, but perhaps the RIBA more than some, needs a President that the whole membership will regard with respect. I cannot think of anyone who could better command that respect because you have that magic mix of professional skill, demonstrated communication skills and great personal style. I speak of course only as an Hon RIBA member but I am very proud of that and my close links with the profession over many years have been such that I know your Presidency would be memorable
Martin Bradshaw PPRTPI MA DipTP HonRIBA
I am not an architect, I am a TV and Film producer and I have known and worked with Angela Brady for over twenty years. She is always inspiring, passionate about her profession and has a natural ability to communicate those passions on television, through her writing and on radio. With all the excitement building towards the 2012 London Olympics, RIBA needs a great communicator at the helm to best take advantage of the opportunity this huge event will offer to showcase the very best of British Architecture not just to the general public, but to the world. I can’t vote for her but if I could, I would!
Avril MacRory CEO Silverapples Media Ltd
I am very proud to say that I have known Angela for a number of years now and recognise her to be a person of great integrity, organisation and commitment as well as a big-hearted personality and a natural communicator. She has always impressed me by the way she is able to balance the running of her own successful practice with her enthusiasm to forge links with others in the profession. She is someone who can see beyond the narrow confines of competitive practice to see the potential strength of architects communicating and working together. In an era when there is almost unprecedented interest and an urgent need for good design in our urban environment, I believe she is the right leader for the RIBA at the right time. Without any doubt she has the skills, the charm and the personality necessary to take on the responsibility of representing her profession. Not only does she have my strong support but also that of all the Partners and directors here at Farrells.
John Letherland, Partner, Farrells
As a former tutor I have known Angela Brady from her extremely active student days and again as a colleague during her success as a practitioner. As a student Angela was one of the campaigning spirits in a movement to save Georgian and Medieval Dublin. She has never lost that spirit in her professional work. Along with her obvious design skills she brings professionalism, energy and resourcefulness to the table. A first class communicator Angela Brady would be a brilliant and able president Des Mc Mahon, Gilroy McMahon Architects
As a past External Examiner at University of Brighton, Angela Brady demonstrated her capability as a dynamic force and ‘critical friend’ in the best interests of educational quality and advance in architecture. She provided a robust and refreshing critique, drawing on ‘real world’ practical experience in that role, and I believe she would bring similar passion, drive and precision to the presidency. She is an energetic and assertive character, and I can imagine that her leadership of RIBA would be challenging, of high calibre and pro-active. Her championship of genuine representation and inclusion in the profession is timely, and backed up by her chairing of Women in Architecture and her commitment to local community engagement and quality sustainable design in the built environment.
I wholeheartedly support Angela Brady’s ambition to become RIBA President
Dr Catherine Harper. Head of the School of Architecture and Design
Delighted to hear that you are standing for President Angela - you will be a wonderful role model both for your profession and women in architecture. It has been a delight to work with you on the Women @ Work project and impressive to see how your enthusiasm and natural gift for communication and professionalism has enabled and facilitated new international relationships and networks to be built across cultures and continents. We could not have delivered the project without your support and commitment.

I fully support Angela’s nomination. Angela has an outstanding track record championing accessibility to and opportunity for all within the profession. It really does substantiate her Manifesto Message “Actions not Words” Angela has brought to all her work a boundless energy, commitment and enthusiasm which has been central to the progression of many of the groups with which she has been involved. As President I believe Angela would champion all architects and positively promote the significant contribution architects can make to the huge challenges in the financial world and workplace ahead of us.

I have known Angela for more years than I care to remember and unbelievably her levels of energy and her unstinting commitment to promoting the profession of Architecture locally and internationally seems to increase year by year. Angela's inclusive vocabulary, friendly manner and skills as a communicator engage all ages and walks of life with the built environment in her unique style. Her diplomatic and organizational skills know no borders, she has hosted Architects from all over the world including Kirghizia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. In my opinion RIBA would be lucky to have Angela as their President
Maria Kiernan FRIAI Director and Founder of the
Russian Irish Cultural Foundation
I have known Angela Brady for many years as an inspiring contributor and our UK Correspondent for Architecture Ireland, the official journal of the RIAI. Her wonderful and thought-provoking contributions – also to our sister publication HOUSE architecture and design – have energised and enriched both magazines. Angela continuously strives for a better understanding of the value that the architectural profession brings to society. Not only has she played an important role in the professional organisations in the UK and Ireland, she also bridges the gap between the profession and the public through her writings, lectures, exhibitions, workshops, tv programmes and many more activities. For many people Angela has become an identifiable and engaging public face of architecture. Angela is an untiring champion for architecture and the architectural profession and as such she would lead the RIBA with energy, intelligence and inspiration
Dr Sandra O’Connell Editor Architecture Ireland
I have known Angela Brady for a number of years with the Civic Trust Awards. Angela first volunteered to become an Architectural Assessor for the scheme in 2000 and quickly demonstrated her passion and dedication to promoting design excellence, championing a fair assessment approach whilst promoting exemplar projects for awards consideration As a National Panel member since 2005 and as Vice-Chair since 2007 she ensures fair representation of assessor’s views for Awards recognition. Angela has demonstrated a depth of knowledge in assessing design merit and a commitment to best practice that is truly unparalleled. Angela’s team spirit and professionalism has seen her take on a range of responsibilities; from the assessment of international entries to presenting Awards at the National Civic Trust Awards Ceremony. It is clear that Angela is held in high esteem by her colleagues and contemporaries and has the necessary drive, enthusiasm and commitment to make an excellent RIBA President - I have no hesitation in offering my support.

Letter from China:
Angela brought the DiverseCity exhibition to Beijing and Zhengzhou in May 2004 with George Ferguson PPRIBA, along with RIBA USA Chapter......."It was the first time that our Chinese architects had the opportunity to join an international event, sponsored by the prestigious RIBA and CABE and the first time Beijing and Zhengzhou were important stations around the world. As the leader of DiverseCity, Angela really established a stable and friendly bridge between China and UK, especially showcasing our Chinese architects and gave them insight into RIBA members work. Her brilliant idea was ‘like a sparkle in the darkness’ whcih lit the minds of our architects. She inspired many people here. We believe DiverseCity is a catalyst for change, where more and more Chinese architects can enter the world, just like more and more British architects come to China."
Angyla Wang Director of Training Department Association of Commerce. China Advertising Ministry of Commerce. P. R. China.
Angela Brady is an effective partner and co motivater to defend the cause of women architects and minority groups as evident in the exhibition “DiverseCity – The Global Snowball” . She has actively spoken at many of our conferences at the Arsenal in Paris recently with Odile DECQ and at the Wallonie on equality, on the role of women in architecture and in Greece in 2007 at a joint exhibition with the EDEM Association to 800 guests for the exhibition on Greek women engineers, on projects carried out in European. We believe Angela BRADY is an Ambassador for RIBA and UK architects and defends their interests with Governments and European institutions. Please accept the assurances of our highest consideration
Catherine Guyot, Présidente of ARVHA Paris
Angela and I spent several years on the National Panel of the Civic Trust Awards and I saw that she is more than just a top professional; she also understands media and people. She is an inspirational leader and communicator, and has a clear, and perhaps more importantly an attractive vision for how the future might be. Her vision encompasses both good design and a ‘more than surface deep’ regard for the absolutely paramount ecological and social determinants of our common future on Earth. For a whole host of reasons I think she would make an excellent RIBA President.
Dave Hampton - The carbon coach
I believe Madam Angela Brady will be an excellent RIBA Leader on behalf of my fellow 86 architects working with BCCI in Beijing. As a senior architect, the president of BCCI, AIA, and the member of RIBA, a friend of hers for more then 6 years, I am sure she is the best person to choose. Good luck!

In the Greek Women's Engineering Association (EDEM) we do know and respect
Angela Brady very well because she had organized many successful initiatives for
the promotion of the work of women architects in UK in the frame of her involvement in RIBA.
Those initiatives had so powerful impact that was the model for the organization of similar events in other European countries, including Greece.
Let us mention that the large exhibition 'Diversity' of the work of women architects with Angela as main organizer, which took place in London, had really impressed EDEM's President that period (Danny Antanasioti) by the quality and variety of the works. The result was EDEM to organize a similar exhibition in Athens (29 March- 4 April 2008) which gathered more that 100 works of Greek women architects and more that 800 visitors. EDEM found a great supporter in Angela's face. She also gave an enthusiastic speech the day of the official opening which inspired the women engineers in the audience. The UK exhibited works were really distinguished ones and they really added in the high quality of the exhibition. This initiative also contributed in the transfer of innovation and know how between the architects' societies in both countries.
We are sure that, Angela Brady will serve RIBA as an excellent President, full of innovative ideas and initiatives at both national and international level
Greek Women's Engineering Association (EDEM) Board of Directors
Betty Rouni, Dr. Eng., President Danny Antanasioti, Eng. Msc, Vice President Nadia Moraiti, Architect Msc,.

I wholly support the nomination of Angela Brady for President of the RIBA. She is an inspiring and assertive voice for architects nationwide, and as a non-RIBA member, I would seriously consider becoming a member if Angela Brady was at the helm
